The Ocean Viking rescue ship saved dozens of migrants on overcrowded boats Tuesday off the coast of Italy as the country’s new right-wing government looked set for a new clash with migrant rescue charities.
MORE: The ship, operated by French NGO SOS Mediterranee, is currently carrying 202 migrants, while other 180 were saved in different operations by Humanity 1 rescue ship.
The two vessels run by charity organizations may be denied disembarkation rights in Italy, as announced by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi on Tuesday.
A coastguard statement said 663 people and two bodies were picked up from a boat around 60 miles off Sicily, while 494 more people were rescued from another fishing boat closer to the island.
